4 Oct 2017 -

On the 16th of September, the Let's Do It! team accompanied by the President of ISWA, Antonis Mavropoulos, met with the President of Estonia, Kersti Kaljulaid (pictured left), to discuss the preparations for the World Cleanup Day in 2018 on 15th September 2018 and the work status for the relevant mobile app in preparation. ISWA has previously signed an MOU with Let's Do It! and continue to work closely with them in the final year before the big day.

During the 1 hour meeting, the representatives of the Let's Do It! Foundation presented the Clean Up activities that took place this September for the first time in US, and focused on the design and data collection process of the World Cleanup App launched on the 15th of September 2017. The President of Estonia emphasized the role of Estonia in promoting the World Cleanup Day, as a key-element of its international profile, and the need to connect further IT innovation with the Cleanup activities.

The president of ISWA provided useful suggestions regarding the design of the mobile app and the need to advance in users’ engagement and community development. He also  explained ISWA’s ambitions regarding the World Cleanup Day by saying that “ISWA wants to use this civic-led mass movement in order to create bridges to promote scientific insights on waste and recycling to each and every citizen – we hope that with our contribution Let’s Do It! World will incorporate what we call “Citizens’ Science”.

Let’s Do It! World began in Estonia in 2008 when 50,000 people united together to clean up the entire country in just five hours. ISWA and Let's Do It World! have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in December 2016 in order to better achieve the common goal of a clean and healthy planet as well as promote waste prevention and sustainable waste management on a global scale.

The waste mapping mobile application, available for Android and iOS devices, has been developed as part of preparatory efforts for the World Cleanup Day happening on the 15th of September 2018, which will see volunteers from 113 countries coming together in an organized global cleanup action.

The meeting showed a positive prognosis for the success of the World Cleanup Day, while the President of Estonia expressed her full support and promised to promote the app and the campaign at the upcoming UN General Assembly.

After the meeting, ISWA’s President informed the ISWA’s Board of Directors that there are efforts to incorporate Artificial Intelligence into the mobile app and that he hopes that this will stimulate more software engineers all over the world to use Artificial Intelligence for the benefit of sustainable waste management and citizens’ involvement.
