We’re delighted to share the most recent Editor’s Choice article from the latest issue of Waste Management & Research (WM&R), as selected by Alberto Bezama (Associate Editor for the journal).

18 Jul 2017 -

The editor's pick for July is:

Electricity production from municipal solid waste in Brazil

Editor’s Comment:

South American countries face nowadays many challenges in the implementation of sound technical alternatives for waste management. The infrastructures for an integrated management approach are missing, as the waste management sector is mainly based on sanitary landfills for the disposition of unsorted waste, and there is still a long way to go to implement integrated approaches that allow a material and energy recovery.

For this reason this article was selected for this month’s “Editor’s choice”, as it provides an interesting perspective in the discussion on which are not only the technological but also the management alternatives that can serve the purpose of an integrative MSW management approach, taking the example of the city of Santo André, in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The authors study potential alternatives for energy recovery based on the current MSW management situation in the case study city, focusing on incineration concepts for energy recovery. The presented results and discussions shed interesting insights on the assessed scenarios. Since the selected case study region is representative of several districts throughout South America, these results can be of interest for a wide audience and could serve as a discussion basis in many other cities across the continent.
