I attended the ISWA-SWIS Winter School 2025 in Texas in January, and it was an enriching and eye-opening experience. From the very beginning, I had the privilege of kicking off the program with a presentation for ISWA, introducing attendees to who we are, what we do, and how they can get involved. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with participants and set the stage for meaningful discussions throughout the program.

Over the course of two weeks, I had the opportunity to dive deep into the world of solid waste management, learning from industry experts, engaging in discussions with fellow professionals, and gaining practical insights through field visits and case studies. One of the highlights of the program was our visit to Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) International Airport, one of the largest airports in the world. It was interesting to see the waste management operations at such a massive facility and understand the logistical challenges they face in handling waste efficiently.

Another interesting site visit was to the AT&T Stadium, where 9 matches of the FIFA World Cup 2026 will be held. Taking a tour of the expansive stadium through the mazes of the players’ and cheerleaders’ locker rooms, the grandstands and suites was fun to do. But to understand the waste management strategies of such a huge infrastructure that gets filled to the brim during every Cowboys game- that was the most important lesson that the participants learned from the visit. It really made me realize how crucial sustainable waste practices are in minimizing the environmental impact of such large-scale events.

Overall, the Winter School was an exceptional experience. The depth of technical knowledge, the chance to engage with a global network of passionate individuals, and the real-world applications of the concepts discussed made it incredibly worthwhile. I also made good friendships with professionals from all over the world, which made it even more special. I leave this experience more motivated to push for change in sustainable waste management practices and beyond.
