In preparation for the fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC5) to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, ISWA has released five key messages to guide member states and stakeholders. These key messages are:

  1. Reduce plastic waste
  1. Ensure collection of all waste, especially plastics
  1. Upgrade illegal and open dumpsites ban open burning of waste
  1. Increase the role and accountability of Extended producer responsibility schemes
  1. Provide waste management solutions applicable to Socio-economic and cultural conditions

Detailed recommendations for decision-makers can be found here: ISWA Key Messages for INC5.

To reinforce these messages, ISWA, in collaboration with the Ocean Recovery Alliance, hosted two webinars entitled “Alignment of the Plastic Treaty and Basel Convention: Member State Delegates’ Discussion on Waste and Circularity” on October 31st and November 7th. The webinars were aimed at member state delegates involved in the negotiations on the UN Plastics Treaty and the amendment to the Basel Convention on Plastics, as well as ISWA national members. They offered insights into the importance of aligning the UN Plastic Treaty and Basel Convention Framework, aiming to enhance global circular economies and reduce plastic pollution. The webinars included discussions on how member state delegations can guide the reduction of plastic pollution through standardised and verified trade in secondary materials.
