On 22nd April 2022, ISWA´s project on Circular and Low Carbon Cities (CALC) is arranging a mini conference with a focus on metrics for the waste prevention “Cascades,” starting with refuse and rent, including repair, replacement of parts, and other processes that lengthen useful life. The metrics are connected to the CALC project intention to be able to calculate greenhouse gas offsets for waste prevention.
The purpose of the mini conference is to raise awareness on how to be successful in preventing waste and increase circularity in the city. The overall goal for the call is to gather best practices on these topics.
The agenda consists of invited speakers and 5 selected examples of metrics and indicators for measuring the performance and impacts of waste prevention processes.
The project is grateful to their hosts the Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO) and the Public Waste Agency in the region of Flanders, Belgium (OVAM)
Circular and Low Carbon Cities (CALC) project
The CALC project works at the intersection of two critical global challenges: Climage change and resource scarcity. The aim of the project is to support cities in making coices to increase circularity and reduce emissions. Three of ISWA’s Working Groups are invovled in the proejct, the Working Group on Recycling & Waste minimisation, Climate Change & Waste Management and Biological Treatment of Waste, as well as a team of dedicated volunteers. The project is now in its second year.

REGISTRATION
Hybrid setup
The conference has been setup in a hybrid format to accommodate all those that are interested in the topic and would like to join worldwide. The in person event will only be available to maximum 15 attendees and will be held in Mechelen, Belgium. Click here to get information on the location, directions and hotel recommendations.
Registration fee
A minimal registration fee has been set up for those wanting to join. These costs do not have a commercial intend and will go directly back into the CALC project budget. If you would like to know more please do not hesitate to ask.
Cancellation policy
Registration may be transferred to a nominated representative. Any cancellation of registration must be submitted in writing to ISWA by e-mail: events@iswa.org
Cancellation and refund will be subject to the following conditions:
• Cancellation until April 14th: 50% refund
• Cancellation between April 14th 2022 and April 22nd: 10% refund
• “no show”: No refund
In case of cancellation of the CALC mini conference due to unforeseeable events including pandemic regulations. ISWA will refund the registration fee but no other costs incurred prior to cancellation.
In case of cancellation of a registrant the above rules apply. If there are bank transfer costs we will calculate 5 euro deduction to ensure the bank transfer fees are covered, these will be deducted from any refund.

FREE EXTRA: Study visit in Flanders: Plastics recycling, e-waste dismantling
On Thursday 21st of April all in person registrants can join a site visit of two companies in the afternoon, located close to each other, ‘t Veer – Recylec, specialized in the dismantling of electronics, and Galloo the ELV recycling unit. Departure from Mechelen will be around 1 PM CEST.

The venue is easily reachable for those coming into Belgium from an international destination. It is located next to the train station of Mechelen.
It is only 15 minutes by train from Brussels Airport Zaventem and 45 minutes from Antwerp International Airport.
