The waste sector is a significant, yet often underrecognized, contributor to climate change mitigation. While traditionally accounting for 3–5% of direct global GHG emissions, the sector’s indirect mitigation potential can reach up to 20% when including avoided emissions through prevention, recycling, and energy recovery. This potential remains largely untapped in most national climate strategies.
To address this gap, the French Solid Waste Partnership, with the support of AFD and ISWA have developed the Atlas on Waste Management and Climate Change Mitigation, a landmark publication that maps the current integration of waste strategies in Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) across 103 countries, outlines key emission reduction levers, and advocates for the recognition of waste management as a climate-critical sector.
This webinar will mark the official launch of the Atlas and aims to present key findings and insights from the publication while raising awareness on the role of sustainable waste management in achieving climate goals. The webinar will also explore how the waste sector can be better integrated into national and international climate policies and financing mechanisms.
