ISWA and Realdania Establish Partnership for Circular Construction Challenge - Rethink Waste

ISWA is pleased to announce that it will be a key communications and dissemination partner for The Circular Construction Challenge: Rethink Waste, an exciting new circular challenge recently launched by a Danish consortium led by Realdania.

24 Aug 2018 -

The Circular Construction Challenge is targeting waste innovators, that reuse, recycle and upcycle waste to new transformative solutions in the built environment. The goal is to support the building industry as a key player as we move towards a circular economy.

The competition is open to all solutions from early stage ideas to more mature innovations that - with support, mentoring, prototyping tests - will be able to advance and scale radically. The challenge officially launches on August 24, 2018 and the deadline for submission is on October 1, 2018. The initial phase will only be open to participants based in Denmark and to international companies with a Danish branch, but recruitment and participation will be extended internationally once the six best designs have been selected by October 2018.

Alongside communications, events and dissemination, ISWA will also play a key role in the selection committee, represented by President, Antonis Mavropoulos. Commenting on the challenge, ISWA President Antonis Mavropoulos said, “ISWA is excited to be on board with this new project, which I am confident will be a huge success and pave the way for innovation in circular design. As ISWA highlighted in its 2017 reports, we can only talk about a circular economy if we have strong cooperation throughout the value chain and amongst the various industries including design and waste.”

About the ambition to attract international companies, Jesper Nygård, CEO from Realdania, said: “The road to a global circular economy goes through close cross-border collaborations. By inviting companies outside Denmark to participate in the challenge, we hope to create new business opportunities for all participants, and to make sure innovative solutions that point towards a more sustainable future will have better chance of reaching the global market.”
