Spring School 2019 - How to Design Solutions for Solid Waste Management

The Istituto Cattaneo in Bologna, Italy, together with their industry partners: Suez, ALIA, and HeraAmbiente, will hold the second Spring School Training Course in Bologna, under the Scientific Coordination of senior ISWA member Dr. Simonetta Tunesi

Headquarterd in Italy's economic and academic heart, the Cattaneo Institute Research Foundation specialises on social, political and economic issues and provides applied training for public administration professionals and practitioners.

The method and tools that you will be taught were developed by Dr Tunesi from over 25 years of experience in international waste management planning. Dr Tunesi is also a consultant for risk assessment and contaminated sites remediation.

Is the Spring School for you?

Solid Waste Management (SWM) is a complicated problem, as policy-makers and practitioners know all too well. So, how does a long-lasting solution begin? First of all, the solution must be carefully designed, avoiding a sense of emergency to dominate policy actions. The goal of this intensive one week training is to produce SWM planning documents that can guide policy actions for several years.

Participants at this Spring School will be provided with a design method and tools necessary to:

  • build a comprehensive vision of the existing, non-effective reality;
  • define critical elements and waste treatment bottle-necks;
  • formulate alternative solutions and compare them in terms of social and environmental impacts, cost and financial sustainability;
  • approve a SWM National Strategy or a SWM City Plan that provides an action path.

A Certificate of Attendance will be provided to all those who complete the training.
