This year, ISWA celebrated the 11th ISWA Beacon Conference on Waste-to-Energy, October 29-30, 2019 Malmö, Sweden and the 20th annual conference on WtE, organized by the Swedish Waste Management Association, Avfall Sverige. Weine Wiqvist, former president of Avfall Sverige remarked that the industry had successfully developed up to now, with the main drivers being stricter rules such as BREF and BAT, development of markets and co-incineration as well as a positive change of image. Participants could visit two state-of-the-art facilities – Sysav’s new bottom ash sorting and recycling facility and ARC Copenhill, Denmark’s newly opened and positively stylish WtE facility.

Bettina Kamuk (Ramboll) presented ‘20 years of technical development, trends, successes, and disappointments’ as well as looking into the futureExpansion of WtE in Asia, Africa, and Australia’. ISWA group, Women of Waste (WOW!) took the opportunity to highlight the women participants at the conference: ‘We ‘re out there, just not very visible!’ said WOW! coordinator Georgina  Nitzsche.
