Vacancy: ISWA Technical Coordinator

The International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) is a global, independent, and non-profit-making association, working in the public interest with the mission of promoting sustainable waste management and the transition to a circular economy.  As part of its mission, ISWA has developed partnerships and programs both internally and with other international organisations for research into best practices and policies as well as dissemination through events, practical training, and support for the varying needs of professionals in different regions across the globe. Through these activities, the Association is fully engaged in the fight against the Triple Planetary Crisis (Climate Change, Pollution and Biodiversity Loss). ISWA is currently looking for a candidate enthusiastic about sustainability to fulfil the role of Technical Coordinator. They will support our Technical Team, as part of the young and motivated General Secretariat based in Rotterdam.

Job Description

The main task and purpose of this full-time position is to support the Technical Team with project work and to further strengthen ISWA’s profile as the leading international association representing all aspects and partners within the solid waste sector. The Technical Team assists cooperation across the technical working groups and task forces, bringing together expert contributions and opinions on a breadth of topics from practical waste management (e.g. Circularity, Hazardous Waste, etc) on the ground, all the way to international policy and regulation (e.g. UNFCCC, INC Plastic Pollution, etc). We are looking for a (young) professional with international waste management experience a technical background and analytical capacity that can add value while weaving together the institutional knowledge and expertise to help provide answers to some of the most pressing questions of this time. Experience with project fundraising is a plus. The place of employment is Rotterdam, Netherlands.

Tasks and Responsibilities

The position requires a cross-sectoral approach focusing on the following areas:

  • Project management in externally funded cooperation projects with ISWA’s partners and international organisations. This entails the full spectrum of project management, including preparation of proposal documents, drafting of ToRs, contract management, financial management, stakeholder management, organisation of events, coordination work, drafting of meeting inputs, presentations, and reports, giving presentations in various types of events, providing inputs to the communication team etc.
  • Coordination of activities and internal projects of ISWA’s technical groups, i.e. the Working Groups, the Scientific and Technical Committee (STC) and Task Forces.
  • Maintenance and development of ISWA’s technical programs, including assistance to ISWA’s Working Groups, STC and Task Forces
  • Project proposal evaluation and/or formulation including those under European funding programs and international funding programs or institutions.
  • Writing grant applications & funding proposals. Identify, plan and oversee fundraising opportunities to secure funding for specific STC projects and Task Forces.
  • Implementation of innovative projects of the General Secretariat
  • Provide additional support to the Technical Director

Requirements

The applicant must fulfil the following professional and personal requirements and skills:

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in a relevant field or
  • Minimum 2 years of proven international experience in project management in the field of sustainability, preferably in waste management.
  • Technical knowledge in sustainable waste management.
  • Experience in drafting official project documents and reports to submit to respective funding agencies.
  • Knowledge of fundraising landscape experience in project fundraising
  • Works well in teams, under pressure, self-motivated and self-sufficient.
  • Attention to detail and quality.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and clear communication skills.
  • Strong coordination and organisational skills.
  • Tact and diplomacy.
  • Computer proficiency: MS Office.
  • Flexibility & willingness to travel.
  • Proficient command of English in writing and speaking (proficiency in other languages is an advantage).
