Founded in 1966, ADB is owned by 69 members—50 from the region.
Under its Water and Urban Development Sector Cluster, ADB supports developing member countries in improving solid waste management (SWM) through integrated, sustainable, and climate-resilient solutions. From 2016 to 2025, ADB invested $1.3 billion in urban SWM projects—funded through loans and grants—covering a range of interventions across the waste management value chain, including policy reforms and institutional strengthening, promotion of circular economy practices, and deployment of appropriate technologies. Through investments, technical assistance, and knowledge sharing, ADB helps cities enhance service delivery, reduce pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, recover valuable resources, and engage communities in creating healthier, more resilient, and sustainable environments.
