It has been a privilege to start my ISWA journey with a very informative hybrid mini conference of Circular and Low Carbon Cities (CALC) Project on 22 April 2022 on my very first week. The mini conference is part of the 3-day spring meeting activities, April 20-22, 2022, of the ISWA Working Group on Recycling and Waste Minimisation (WGRWM) in Mechelen, Belgium. This was hosted by VITO, the Flemish Institute for Technological Research and was held at OVAM, the Public Waste Agency of Flanders.

The mini conference featured various thematic sessions with valuable presentations from circularity and waste management experts across the globe. It includes initiatives of various cities towards circularity, indicators to measure it, and metrics for waste prevention cascades and its associated CO2 offsets. All participants expressed their continuous support to CALC and shared important insights for the furtherance of the project.

Prior to the CALC mini conference, a WGRWM meeting was conducted on the first day and followed by a study visit on the second day to the following waste treatment plants in Belgium: Indaver, ‘t Veer, and Galloo. This 3-day event was led by WGRWM Chair, Anne Scheinberg together with its Vice-Chair, Dirk Nelen and was supported by its members and by the presence of the ISWA Managing Director, Marc Tijhuis in the CALC mini conference.
