From 30th May to 3rd June 2022, members of the ISWA Board and GS were in Munich for IFAT 2022: Trade Fair for Water, Sewage, Waste and Raw Materials Management.

After a four year hiatus, this highly ainticipated edition of IFAT Munich welcomed 2.984 exhibitors and 119,000 visitors from around the world. The ISWA Booth welcomed an international crowd throughout the week, with high-level networking receptions and expert-led panel discussions.

A truly global community

ISWA welcomed delegations from Singapore, Brazil and Malaysia. On Monday, Dr. Amy Khor, Singapore’s Senior Minister of State for Transport, and Sustainability and the Environment, joined our Welcome Reception and personally invited our visitors to the 2022 ISWA World Congress in her home city, this coming September.

On Tuesday, Brazil’s Minister of Environment Joaquim Alvaro Pereira Leite and his delegation joined our second High-Level Networking reception for discussions on the advances in waste management in Brazil along with new developments for the sector.

On Thursday, ISWA welcomed Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican and the Malaysian Ministry of Housing and Local Government, making sure he had some of his own ISWA merch to represent us wherever he went.

A Focus on the Future

ISWA also featured at the IFAT Forum through a keynote session on the future of the waste management sector. ISWA President Carlos Silva Filho took to the stage in front of a full, engaged audience to outline the key findings of ISWA’s 2021 Publication titled “The Future of the Waste Management Sector”. Carlos urged the audience to take action and pointed out the link between inadequate waste management and socio-economic inequality.

Copies of the report were handed out at the ISWA Booth, and the digital download is available here.

Expert-led Events hosted at IFAT

ISWA also co-hosted two panel discussions. The first focused on the Waste Sector’s role towards achieving the goals of the Global Methane Pledge. Jointly hosted by UmweltbundesamtClimate & Clean Air CoalitionDeutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and PREVENT Waste Alliance, speakers at this session discussed how methane reductions could be maximized across the waste and resource management sector, as well as which policies and frameworks can be put in place to give us the best chance at delivering methane reductions.

A five-person panel, including ISWA Vice President Arne Ragossnig, made up the hosts of our European Roundtable on Innovative Technical Solutions for Circular Economy and Waste Management.

Innovations at the roundtable addressed circularity at different scales – from food waste prevention through smart inventory, transparent material passport management for construction, mobile and modular waste processing systems and finally a system wide perspective on the use of carbon capture technologies. The session was organised in collaboration with LINETECHNOLOGY GmbHEEW Energy from Waste GmbH and RM Umweltkonsulenten ZT GmbH.

With the excitement building towards the 2022 ISWA World Congress, ISWA’s National Member in Singapore and host of the Congress this year in September, WMRAS, chose to have a ticket giveaway at the ISWA Booth. Visitors were encouraged to enter the raffle and two lucky winners left the trade show with free tickets to the Congress!
