National Member Blog | China: Guidelines for the Environmental Sanitation Industry During Covid-19

The China Association of Urban Environmental Sanitation is ISWA’s National Member in China. Over the last year, CAUES has issued a National Group Standard “Guidelines for emergency response in environmental sanitation industry during major epidemic period (Trial)”

Following the successful outcomes of their initiative, they would like to share the outcome with ISWA members.

During the COVID-19 epidemic period, the sanitation departments of China have:

  • Classified the exposure risks of sanitation personnel
  • strengthened the safety protection of environmental sanitation personnel,
  • performed well in sweeping and cleaning, guaranteed the safe and stable operation of environmental sanitation facilities,
  • regulated the hygiene of public toilets,
  • regulated the treatment of faecal waste,
  • regulated the transportation and treatment of food waste,
  • as well as regulated the disposal, collection, transportation and treatment of domestic waste.

Rich experience has been accumulated in the effective prevention and control of the epidemic- . the protection of environmental sanitation persona, the measures taken for the clean of public toilets, as well as the safe operation strategies for the transportation and treatment of sanitation facilities during the COVID-19 epidemic period. Through extensive solicitation of opinions, China Urban Construction Design & Research Institute CO.,LTD. and other institutions edited Guidelines for emergency response in environmental sanitation industry during major epidemic period (Trial) to prepare for similar major epidemic period in the future.

This standard comprises 11 chapters with the main contents as follows:

  1. General provisions;
  2. Terms;
  3. Basic requirements;
  4. Protection requirements;
  5. Sweeping and cleaning;
  6. Public toilet cleaning and sanitary control;
  7. Collection and transportation of municipal solid waste;
  8. Removal and transportation of faecal sludge;
  9. Food waste collection and transportation;
  10. Operation and management of domestic waste and faeces treatment facilities.
  11. The standard is applicable to the protection of environmental sanitation personnel, as well as the operation and supervision of environmental sanitation facilities during the major epidemic period.
