The first week in May is not only a time for celebration (such as International Workers’ Day, the World Press Freedom Day and the World Hand Hygiene Day) in many countries, but it’s also when International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW) is held. An initiative started by the Compost Council of Canada over 25 years ago, it aims to reach out to people in every walk of life, educating them about and promoting the benefits of making and using compost: a message that is relevant to small-scale backyard composters and large-scale industrial facilities alike.
Every year the initiative focuses on a different key message, with this year’s being ‘Recycle Your Organics – Feed Your Soils – Compost!’. Eleven organisations worked together to spread the message globally and highlight to a non-professional audience how composting can recycle carbon, help mitigate climate change and feed the soil.
