The WGHW is the group of experts and professionals within ISWA focusing on the management of hazardous wastes from both industrial and household sources with a regional and international scope, as well as the remediation of hazardous waste sites resulting from unacceptable hazardous waste management practices.
In the past year, the group has been regularly meeting online to discuss and present different issues on hazardous waste management from their regional context but also looking for international approaches. A fruitful exchange of information and experiences in a range of issues is the regular output and supported by a clear intention of advancing the cause of better hazardous waste management.
The working group has also started a series of specific projects to discuss common concerns and to provide advice from experts that could help different stakeholders and decision makers. The projects are the following:
- Environmentally sound management of mercury waste
- Available technologies for the appropriate treatment of hazardous health care wastes in Latin America
- Good practices: How to safely manage household wastes in different regions of the world?
- Stop waste trafficking
- The minimum requirements for a safe national hazardous waste management policy – start from scratch
All those projects are led and executed by working group members from different parts of the world who come together to advance the project objectives and discuss experiences.
The launch of the projects was officially formalised during the session that the working group hosted in the past ISWA World Congress 2021. Every project was presented by the leaders and the expected results were communicated to the audience.
We extend the invitation to every ISWA member interested on the issue to participate and contribute to the exchange of information. Currently, we have transitioned to an online platform for working and exchanging with the hope that in the future we will have the opportunity of holding hybrid meetings (both in person and online participants).
