ISWA is delighted to welcome The Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) as our latest Silver Member.

The Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) is the national regulator on the environment for the Maltese Islands. It has a leading role in advising Government on environmental policy-making at the national level as well as in the context of international environmental negotiations. The Authority has the following goals for its operation:

    • To mainstream environmental targets and objectives across Government and society;
    • To develop evidence-based policy; backed by a robust data gathering structure;
    • To draw up plans, provide a licensing regime and monitor activities having an environmental impact and to integrate environmental considerations within the development control process.

This shall be achieved amongst others by maintaining consultation and information exchange with stakeholders so as to promote and instill sound environmental management.

“Being an archipelago and making one of the smallest states in the world, solid waste has provided various challenges in Malta throughout the ages. In fact, solid waste features in a significant part of ERA’s work particularly most environmental permits and related policy and project assessments. As members of ISWA, ERA seeks to enhance its existing international network of information exchange in order to foster a more sound management of solid waste”.
