The objective of the ISWA-SWIS Winter School is to provide advanced knowledge in the field of waste management to an international audience of existing and emerging solid waste experts.
At the joint ISWA and SWIS (Solid Waste Institute for Sustainability) Winter School at the University of Texas at Arlington, together with the cities of Irving, Garland, and Grand Prairie Texas, USA, the participants will have the opportunity to gain knowledge on the challenges of solid waste management in developing economies. However, the unique aspect of the Winter School is the blend of in-class and hands on training. The in-class, theory based training and hands-on, operational training are perfectly balanced – with one week dedicated to each.
Participants will learn to understand:
- Landfill siting, design and construction, and operation
- Landfill leachate and gas management and utilization (LFGTE)
- Sustainable waste management (including recycling, composting and waste to energy)
- Waste Economics including waste business development
Specialty areas such as perpetual or sustainable landfill, landfill design and operation and the landfill mining including feasibility, preliminary investigation, operation and management of landfill mining, and impact of landfill mining of sustainable waste management system will be extensively covered. Selected project case studies will be presented and discussed to enhance learning experience.
Participants will receive a Certificate of Participation.

The Solid Waste Institute for Sustainability (SWIS) is housed at the University of Texas at Arlington, Texas, USA. The center is located close to Dallas ‐ Fort Worth (DFW) Airport in Texas with easy and direct access to national and international destinations. Solid waste personnel from different developing countries can easily access SWIS because most of the major cities have direct flights to DFW airport.
The city of Arlington is in the middle of Dallas – Fort Worth (12 miles east of downtown Fort Worth and 20 miles west of downtown Dallas). Arlington is home to the American League West Texas Rangers baseball team (playing out of Global Life Park), home to the NFC East Dallas Cowboys football team (playing out of AT&T stadium), and Six Flags (the biggest regional theme park in the world – www.sixflags.com).
The major facilities that are part of the SWIS for research and training are: (i) Civil Engineering Building (CELB), (ii) Engineering Research Building (ERB), (iii) University of Texas at Arlington Research Institute (UTARI).
The city of Fort Worth’s Annual Stock Show and Rodeo will take place during the winter school. The SWIS Winter School organizers are planning to take all the participants to this year’s Rodeo Show. The details can be found at www.fwssr.com.
NBA Basketball Team Dallas Mavericks regular season will be going on during the winter school program and the participants will have the opportunity to watch live NBA Games.

The program included theoretical classes by leading professionals, experts in the area. As well as group work in specific cases to land the concepts learned throughout the classes.
My group was formed by Abraham from the United Kingdom, Daniana from Colombia, Daniel from the United Kingdom, Eshetu from Ethiopia, Maria from Bangladesh, Mohammed from India, Nasser from Oman, me from Peru and our group leader Mumtahina from Bangladesh. We were in charge of waste management for the city of Bahir Dar, Ethiopia.
The program also included technical visits to various waste management facilities including City of Irving Landfill, City of Grand Prairie Landfill, City of Garland Landfill, City of Fort Worth-Republic Service.
The program concluded with the presentation of waste management projects for the cities assigned per group and the certificate giving from Dr. Sahadat Hossain and Mr. Vance Kemler in the representation of SWIS, and Mr. Law James in the representation of ISWA.
Beyond the professional and academic learning I received, I must highlight the work of the organizers to help us form bonds of friendship. I consider it an important factor to stay in touch for a longer time and collaborate more easily on future projects that help improve the waste management system around the world.
I finished the two weeks of winter school with optimism for the innovative projects that are being carried out. I also end up with new friends who feel the same passion for waste management and understand the importance it has in an increasingly populated society. My “pack of wolves” as Dr. Hossain would say.

Online Registration
Registration fees include course participation, course material, coffee/tea breaks and lunch as well as transfers to and from the university for the technical site visits during teaching days.
Upon registration, participants accept all arrangements organized by ISWA and SWIS. The organizers do not assume liability during field demonstrations and technical visits. Travel health insurance is advisable. The programme may be subject to change.

Cancellation Policy
ISWA-SWIS reserve the right to cancel the course if the minimum number of participants is not reached.

Registration may be transferred to a nominated representative.
Any cancellation of registration must be submitted in writing to ISWA by e-mail: events@iswa.org
Cancellation and refund will be subject to the following conditions:
• Cancellation until 14th December 2023: 50% refund
• Cancellation between 15th December 2023 and 31st December 2023: 10% refund
• Cancellation from 31st December 2023 on or “no show”: No refund
In case of cancellation of the Winter School due to unforeseeable events including pandemic regulations. ISWA will refund the registration fee but no other costs incurred prior to cancellation. In case of cancellation of a registrant the above rules apply. If there are bank transfer costs, these will be deducted from any refund.

How can I receive a letter of invitation?
If you require a VISA to enter the United States we can provide you with a letter of invitation confirming your registration for the Winter School. Please send an email to events@iswa.org to request a letter of invitation after your registration. Please note that we do not provide letters of invitation before a confirmed registration and we advise to check with the US embassy in your country for how much time you need to apply, proceed and obtain your visa.
Will I receive a certificate of participation?
Yes, you will receive a certificate of participation at the end of the two weeks.
How can I apply for a scholarship?
The Solid Waste Institute for Sustainability (SWIS) at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), Texas, USA is pleased to announce the 2023 SWIS-ISWA Scholarships, mainly for students. However, the professionals can also apply. The submission required for consideration of scholarships are:
1.Submit one page paragraph on why you want to participate in ISWA-SWIS Winter School and how it may help your professional life.
2.A short bio (not more than 300 words)
3.List the names of two references (one reference must be from ISWA or ISWA YPG Members)
After reviewing this information, full and partial scholarships will be awarded to attend the ISWA-SWIS Winter School 2024 (to be held at UTA from January 15-26, 2024). However, full time students will be given preference for scholarship. SWIS has introduced these scholarships to promote the importance of sustainable waste management for developing healthy and sustainable urban cities.
Scholarships cover the following:
- Free registration to attend the 2022 ISWA-SWIS Winter School at UTA
- Free lodging during their stay for the winter school (only for full scholarship winners)
- Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
- Free transportation during their stay for the winter school
