The objective of this study tour is exploring how to establish, finance and operate an appropriate system of waste collection, sorting and resource recovery.
The tour is jointly organised by ISWA through its working group Recycling and Waste Minimisation, ISWA Austria and Technisches Büro Merstallinger. It is a blend of seminars, theory based training and hands-on, operational training. One week prior an online introduction is organised.

THE PROGRAMME
Tuesday May 9th: On Tour around Vienna and Krems: During this day we will visit multiple sites: Collection sites on the streets for private households in the City of Vienna – large collection site for all kinds of separated waste from households. Treatment of Biowaste and composting plant. Treatment of commercial waste, Sorting plant for plastic packaging waste
Wednesday, May 10th: On Tour around Wels: Technical Tour “Paper and Board”, this involves the history of producing paper and modern collection, sorting and producing paper from “old paper”. Next we will have a Technical Tour of “LAVU”: Visiting of a collection site with a Re-Use Shop, which sells secondary raw materials
Thursday, May 11th: On Tour Pöchlarn and Amstetten: Technical Tour “Glass” Complete process of glass recycling – from old bottles to new bottles; collection, sorting and recycling. The second tour of the day is the Technical Tour “Metals and WEEE”; Shredding of Metals, cars and WEEE, sorting of metals and recycling of plastics from WEEE
Friday, 12th May: Seminar in Vienna; The study tour ends with a seminar day in Vienna. The topics on this day will include Financing, Waste management fees, Visit of Re-Use Shop “Tandler” and Info about waste prevention activities in Vienna. You will receive a farewell-present “Vienna Surprise” during the closing of the event. Finally we will say our goodbye during a lunch at Tandler.

DI Michael Merstallinger has been working in the field of waste management and environmental technology for 20 years. From 2003 to 2015 he worked as an employee and from 2015 to 2020 as the managing director of Technisches Büro HAUER Umweltwirtschaft GmbH. During this time, he acquired a great deal of expertise in many areas of waste management and environmental technology and independently handled diverse and comprehensive projects. A major area of expertise was the management of pilot projects to improve separate collection and the analyses required to evaluate the success of the changeover.
He also conducted numerous waste analyses throughout Austria on a wide variety of fractions and issues. The organisation and implementation of technical excursions for national and international experts in the field of waste management and recycling technology was also a core area of activity. He conducted the one-week ISWA Study Tour “Collection-Sorting-Recycling-Financing”, in cooperation with ISWA International and ISWA Austria, in 2014, 2016, 2018, 2019.
In May 2020, he founded his own technical office.
PRICING & REGISTRATION
Registration fees include accommodation with breakfast from May 7 – 11 2023, course participation, course materials, refreshments, lunch and dinner, as well as transportation and visits to the waste treatment plants. 21% VAT is applicable to the fees and is mentioned clearly when it is included. Student and Online ISWA memberships do not allow for the discounted fee. Upon registration, participants accept all arrangements by ISWA, ISWA Austria and Technisches Büro Merstallinger. The organisers do not assume liability during field demonstrations and technical visits. Travel health insurance is advisable. The programme may be subject to change. Participants will receive a Certificate of Participation.

Cancellation Policy
ISWA reserves the right to cancel the course if the minimum number of participants is not reached.
Minimum number of participants: 10
Registration may be transferred to a nominated representative.
Any cancellation of registration must be submitted in writing to ISWA by e-mail: events@iswa.org
Cancellation and refund will be subject to the following conditions:
• Cancellation until 1 April 2023: 50% refund
• Cancellation until 20 April 2023: 10% refund
• Cancellation after 20 April 2023 or “no show”: No refund
In case of cancellation of the study tour due to unforeseeable events including pandemic regulations. ISWA will refund the registration fee but no other costs incurred prior to cancellation. In case of cancellation of a registrant the above rules apply.
Bank transfer costs will be deducted from any refund.
