ISWA collaborates on a number of EU funded projects, acting as a communication and dissemination partner in consortiums tackling varying issues in and around waste management. With these activities ISWA acts as knowledge multiplier, promoting sustainable waste management according to its mission. ISWA also acts as representative of the waste management industry and conduit to other industrial stakeholders. Please see below for some of active projects.
iBot4CRMs - Enhancing Europe’s resilience in Critical Raw Materials supply through AI-driven robotics
Critical Raw Materials (CRMs) are essential for sustainable technology. Europe’s reliance on a few distant primary sources makes its supply chain vulnerable to disruptions. iBot4CRMs is developing integrated AI-powered robotic systems to maximise the recovery and recycling of critical raw materials from urban waste. Through urban mining, the project will complement external sources to help Europe achieve resilience and competitiveness in the supply of critical raw materials (CRMs).
Wood2Wood - Transforming wood waste into valuable resource for a greener future
The new circularity project for wood seeks to revolutionise the wood industry by promoting innovation and collaboration to establish a sustainable circular economy. Through the principles of reduce, reuse, recycle and upcycle, we aim to repurpose secondary wood materials, reduce waste, and shrink the environmental impact of construction and demolition as well as furniture industries.
RECLAIM – AI powered Robotic Material Recovery in a Box
RECLAIM – EU funded project will work on the construction of the first portable, fully robotic Material Recovery Facility (prMRF). This system uses artificial intelligence to identify and categorize waste, supported by citizen science.

DECOAT - Recycling of coated and painted textile and plastic materials

ECOBULK - Circular Composite Bulky Products
A project dedicated to demonstrating circular applications for the furniture, automotive and construction industries using composite plastic materials by redesigning the entire chain. The project finished in November 2021.
