Presentation on ‘The Global Methane Pledge and the Waste Sector’

Anja Schwetje, Scientific Officer at German Environment Agency (UBA), Vice-Chair of the WGCCWM of ISWA and Co-Lead of CCAC’s Waste Hub

The Global Methane Pledge (GMP) launched in 2021 by the USA and the EU was joined by 150 countries up to day demonstrating high-level political engagement to catalyse global methane action. With more than half of global methane emissions being caused by human activities mainly in three sectors waste (20 %), fossil fuels (35 %) and agriculture (40 %) the GMP calls to globally reduce methane emissions in these areas by 30 % in 2030 compared to 2020. The paper describes the background of the Pledge, some of the global organizations and initiatives involved and uses the example of Germany to discuss the policy and measures relevant for a methane reduction in the waste sector. Centre piece to achieve this is the diversion of organic waste from landfills and dumpsite towards a circularity.
