Sittard-Geleen is a municipality in the south-east of the Netherlands bordering both Germany and Belgium. The municipality counts almost 100.000 inhabitants. Known for its coal mining past, the municipality’s economy transitioned into a site for innovative petrochemical industry. The Chemelot Industrial site has set the ambition to become the most sustainable chemical site in Western Europe. On this path, many initiatives emerge involving alternative views on petrochemicals, some of which also involve waste streams.
