Waste Around the World: South Australia

Mar 28, 2018 | YPG

South Australia (SA) has long been recognized for its leadership in environmental sustainability. For 40 years it has had a product stewardship scheme in place for beverage containers under Container Deposit Legislation (CDL).

A 10 cent deposit is placed on beverage containers which consumers can redeem when returning containers to recycling depots. Over 76% of containers are returned, and the scheme has been effective for reducing litter, increasing resource recovery and reducing waste going to landfill. As a result, we also enjoy beautiful clean beaches and public spaces.

Other States and Territories in Australia have recognized the merits of SA???s CDL scheme and over the past few years have tried to introduce a similar system. One government – the Northern Territory- ended up in a legal battle with major beverage companies (Coca Cola and Schweppes) who fought against the introduction of a CDS. However, the NT got it through, and today it also has a 10 cent deposit! New South Wales (the home of Sydney) is soon to introduce a similar system.
